Okeechobee Boulevard carries downtown traffic to the I-95 interchange. Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard runs the retail corridor west of the city. Australian Avenue cuts north-south through the middle. Left turns, red-light running, failure to yield. I see those patterns in West Palm Beach files week after week.
Countywide in 2024, there were 807 pedestrian crashes with 61 deaths, plus 724 bicycle crashes. Downtown West Palm Beach concentrates foot traffic: Clematis Street, the waterfront, the crosswalks between them. A person on foot has no crumple zone. A pedestrian struck at 35 mph is a catastrophic injury case, not a fender-bender.
